Day 18 - Underwood, Iowa to Denison, Iowa

Hello all: This morning we left our motel in Underwood, IA a little after 8:00 a.m. We headed west on county road G30, turned left on county road L34, right on Jupiter Rd - drove over gravel for 4.5 miles - and after a few more left and right jogs we got to State Highway 183 at Crescent, IA to reconnected with the old Lincoln Highway. We headed north on the 183, passing through Honey Creek and Loveland before meeting up with U.S. 30 at Missouri Valley…where we finally enjoyed breakfast. After lunch we headed east on US 30, stopping in Logan, Woodbine, Dunlap, Dow City and finally Denison

Denison is the home town of movie star Donna Reed, you youths might not know who she is…but Buddy and I do….

She made movies witth John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart and Rock Hudson - to name a few. (I don’t want to steal Buddy’s thunder).

We found the Park Hotel which is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. Art Deco in design, originally built in 1940 and THE motel on the Lincoln Highway in this part of the country. We just had to spend the night here.

We are about 27 miles short of Carroll - our original destination. We will make up the difference tomorrow.

Bob out.

    Gentlemen,

When do you anticipate passing through historic Plainfield, IL? I am one of the town planners and I am also newly appointed to the Board of the Illinois Lincoln Highway Coalition. If it fits into your schedule, I would love to introduce you to our Mayor and invite you to stop at his wife’s little bakery and deli called “Gourmet Junction” in our historic Downtown. We would love to have the local press takes some photos as well. Please note that our main Downtown street (Lockport Street) is part of the Lincoln Highway, but is currently getting a $7,000,000 facelift to replace 100-year old utilities, add wide new sidewalks, benches, planter boxes and street trees. The street is only open to eatsbound traffic. Please send me an e-mail and I can give you my telephone number if you would like to schedule a quick stop in our historic, but rapidly growing community.

PS: Dear Piaggio USA, we would love to have one of your dealers located in our community, which, last year was ranked the 5th fastest growing community (percent population growth) in the U.S. by Forbes Magazine. We love your products and are sure you would be a great addition to our town.

Hello Mike: Thank you for your kind invitation to meet with you on our way through Plainfield. Plainfield is on our list of “must see” stops as we travel the Lincoln Highway. An opportunity to visit the “Gourmet Junction” would be wonderful. Timing could be a problem– not for us but for you. We will be spending the night of July 3rd in DeKalb. We will be riding through Plainfield this Friday, July 4th. Unfortunately this is the only day we have available as we must continue on toward our destination, being in Time Square on July 14th.

I suggest you send an email to our public relations firm, Brandware leaving a phone number. Lindsey Wagner from Brandware will contact you to work out the details if July 4th is agreeable. I have alerted Lindsey to be on the watch for your email. Her address is: lwagner@brandwaregroup.com

We sincerely hope that we get the opportunity to meet you and the people of Plainfield.

    Bob and Buddy
