Day 13: Buddy & Bob’s High Plains Road Report & Gorgeous Picture Gallery (UPDATED)

Day 13 - Denver/Aurora, CO to Sterling, CO

Our route for the day called for re-engaging with the Lincoln Highway in Bennett, CO and then onto Fort Morgan and our final destination, Sterling, CO. Of the thirteen Lincoln Highway states, Colorado is the most limited on its designations. Our early research provided us with a list of towns to follow, many of which are now connected by newer secondary roads.

Brother-in-law Steven was heading back to Prescott, AZ, but before bidding us farewell I noticed him looking at the MP3s…his head cocked, scratching his hands and stubbled beard, seeming to wonder if all his 1200cc’s were indeed necessary.

We heading northeast, the Rockies abruptly ended and the plains dramatically introduced us to America’s breadbasket.

It was great to be off the interstate surrounding Denver and back on roads with people, towns, and a lived-in feeling.

At times we could see the interstate running parallel to our road.

Amazing to think of those cars whizzing by on the Interstate, their occupants never knowing that life continued to exist alongside them.

The people and way of life we see everyday ought to be seen, understood and valued rather than discarded.

Of course, this may simply be a projection of two senior citizens experiencing America’s main street on their MP3s.

Within minutes off the interstate - between Ft. Morgan and Brush - birds perched on telephone wires, a fox scampered across the road, and a rabbit looked up in panic and ran in the opposite direction.

The smell of the fertilizer was pungent.

There were fields of sugar beets, corn, barley, beans, alfalfa, grass; cattle grazing or in feedlots, and the waving wheat sure smelled sweet

The temperature reached over one hundred, and by 3:30 p.m. we had travelled 150+ miles toward Sterling.  Even at this temperature the MP3’s never skipped a beat.

There was still time to find the motel, then shower, change and get back on the MP3s to visit the Overland Trail Museum - known for having recorded the greatest migration in American history - then we spent the night in what might be the largest pasture in the world.

Tomorrow we cross the Nebraska border on OUR road - the Lincoln Highway.

Goodnight to all,

Buddy

It makes you realize that this is really a great country. It should be mandatory that presidents take a road trip like this before ianuguration and see what people are really like and really care about.
