How To Follow Buddy & Bob: Google Maps vs. Google Earth

Should You Use Google Earth OR Google Maps?

Piaggio Ground Control will be following Buddy & Bob closely over the next four weeks and offering multiple methods of tracking their MP3s on their cross-country adventure along the Lincoln Highway. Position updates, still images, stories and video will be posted throughout each day - cell and internet access permitting, but the most compelling way to follow them will be through our use of Google’s Map & Earth applications. But which one should you use?

Using Google Maps is as easy as visiting this site during each of the 30 days of Buddy & Bob’s cross-country adventure. We will be "geoblogging" updated Google Maps throughout each and every day. A small example is posted above, but our standard-sized embed looks like the one below, our coverage of Day 1. All you have to do is click on one of the icons for more information, or use the controls on the top left to move and/or zoom. The controls at the top right change the underlying map from Map to Satellite to Terrain mode. At the bottom left, just below the map window, is a link labeled "View Larger Map" - clicking there will open a new window on the Google Maps site.

Or, if you use Google Earth, well, although it’s a little more complicated, it’s also a lot more dramatic. First, you’ll have to download the latest version of the Google Earth application. Once installed, anytime you visit this site and see a Google Map, you’ll also see a link and/or linked screenshot labeled "View in Google Earth". Click on one of these links and our latest Google Earth file - called a KML - will download to your computer. Open it, and it will automatically open in Google Earth. Here’s an example of a Google Earth linked screenshot:

As for what to do next, we’ll be posting more detailed instructions about mid-way through their trip…

Hi Bob, Happy to see that you are still pursuing your dream. Thanks for the call when you were in Reno. With such good weather to travel with; perhaps, you will suggest a return trip on the Lincoln Highway during the months of December or January! (smile). Good Luck and Happy riding. John
